  • Philosopher’s Walk

    10 minutes from the hotel on foot

    This two-kilometer path from Nyakuoji Shrine to Ginkakuji Temple is named for philosopher Kitaro Nishida, who rolled various thoughts around in his mind as he strolled around Kyoto. June evenings bring the ethereal light of fireflies, and they will please your eyes as they dart around.

    It is said that Kano Honen Shonin received his training at this temple, which quietly marks the time with its hair moss garden and stone tower. Visitors can see the graves of many famous people including Kyoto’s beloved Jun’ichiro Tanizaki. (The Main Hall is not open to the public)

    The principal temple of the Nanzenji sect of the Rinzai Religion opened under the name Zenrinzenji in 1291. The brick waterways on the grounds are constructed of beautiful arches that stretch about 93 meters in total length, and the touch of harmony is mixed together with the exotic air.

    This shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the national capital to Kyoto. Visitors are thrilled by the shrine pavilions coated in vermillion-lacquered white sand, Japanese gardens totaling about 30,000 square meters, and the royal, pristine atmosphere.

    A feudal lord of the Shinsengumi was stationed here to protect the capital from those who wanted to overthrow the shogunate. Locals refer to this place familiarly as “Kurotani-san.”

    Kaisan leaders established this hall in 984. Many temple treasures, such as the national treasure Hokakei Scrolls, are stored here, and the quiet effects calm the hearts of visitors.
